This messaging application was first released in 2009. WhatsApp is available on a lot of platforms such as the likes of iOS, Android, Nokia Asha, Nokia series 40, BlackBerry 10, and Nokia Symbian. The company was founded by the duo of Jan Koum, who is presently the CEO of the company, and Brian Acton, both of whom are American citizens. They both works for Yahoo! Previously. The headquarters of the company is situated in Mountain View, California, and the total strength of the company is 55. Although the strength is so little, the company still handles billions of text, and voice messages everyday from all over the world.

The company decided to use the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol’s customized version. So after the software is installed, the software would create an account by the user’s phone number which would act as the user name. Then the software checks the contact’s list of the user to check if any of the contacts have WhatsApp accounts. If they have, the user would be able to chat with them on WhatsApp. So the contacts are directly added to the user’s account. Also as the user creates his account, the contact list of WhatsApp for all his friends also gets updated so that they can chat with him as well.
